Seven

After several days had passed without running into Jake, Sara began to relax. Since Gram had told her that Jake went to the office each afternoon, Sara timed her visits with the older woman when she was sure that he wouldn’t be there.

Plans for the reunion were moving along. They’d contacted Laci, and she’d promised she’d try her best to come. A couple of Gram’s great-nieces and nephews had let her know they were coming as well. Sara loved hearing the excitement in Gram’s voice and was glad things were coming together so well.

Nora hadn’t expressed much excitement about the reunion, but she didn’t get excited about too much these days. Sara was beginning to think Grandpa and Gram were right: Maybe Nora did need a man in her life.

Sara had just finished making calls to remind the ladies of the church about the next teddy bear-making meeting and poured herself a glass of iced tea, when the phone rang.

“Hi, Sara,” the voice on the other end said after Sara had answered the phone. “I hear you’ve been quite busy since we’ve been gone.”

“Gina! You’re back. When did you get in? Did you have a good trip? When can we get together?”

“We got in last night, the trip was really rewarding, and anytime is good for me. I missed you!”

“How about the diner?” Sara looked at the clock. The lunch crowd would have cleared out by now. “In about thirty minutes?”

“I’ll be there. I can’t wait to get caught up on what’s been happening in Sweet Springs.”

A short while later, Sara parked at the diner. Gina was already waiting in a booth but got to her feet as soon as she spotted Sara. The two friends hugged and grinned at each other before taking their seats.

“A month is just too long for you and David to be gone. I really have missed you.”

“We’re glad to be home. But the trip really was such an eye-opener for me. We take so many things for granted here, Sara. The orphanage is growing so fast, I’m just glad we’ve been able to help down there. The children will steal your heart.”

“I’m glad you were able to do it. Tom did a real good job while y’all were gone.”

“I’ll tell him you said so. He and Mom are going down to Guatemala with the next work group.”

The waitress came for their order, and they both settled for apple pie and coffee. As soon as they were left alone, Gina grinned over at Sara.

“I hear we have a couple of new faces in town—and that they caused quite a stir in church on Sunday.”

Sara chuckled and nodded. “Jake and Meggie. He’s going into practice with John. They’re staying at Gram’s for now.”

“That’s what I understood.” Gina turned serious. “How is he doing as a single parent?”

“He’s very good with Meggie. And she’s adorable, Gina. I know exactly what you mean by stealing your heart. She stole mine the very first day.”

“It hasn’t been too hard on you, seeing her.
